Last 24 hours have 'killed' French nuclear -

2-Enel pulls out from French EPR nuclear project. Last 24 hours have 'killed' French nuclear - analyst.

This is not good news for European Pressurized  Reactor being built in Flamanville but don't let this over the top headline (which are so prevalent in the media when discussing nuclear) bother you too much. French nuclear energy will continue without ENEL.

  1. Yes, indeed. I think EDF knew since a while that the 6 billions estimation was too low, and they've decided to let out the final price now that they know it won't be slipping more. The new price is high but not really more than the AP 1000 in the US, and still cheaper than offshore wind. It's funny to see so many people who are strongly in favor of offshore wind pretending to be that upset about EPR costs.

ENEL leaving is not necessarily only a bad news. It will make financing harder on the short term, but the exports to Italy are the most profitable ones of EDF. Except of Italy were to go belly up and not need power any more, on the long term, it won't be a bad news at all. Of course it will make finding the money to start new projects, like in England, harder.

  2. About the 50% in 2025 actually no definitive decision has been taken yet. The French grid entity RTE has pulled out a report showing that even with a lot of new renewables and extremely generous assumption about energy use optimizations, this target would still result in 50% higher CO2 emissions from electricity use compared to today.

  3. The French will price themselves out of the market. Who wants to pay double?
