Nuclear fusion is very close to the point where the amount of energy produced by the system equals or surpasses what's been put in.
Sandia scientists say that magnetically imploded tubes called liners, intended to help produce controlled nuclear fusion at scientific "breakeven energies or better, have functioned successfully in preliminary tests.
It's a key test of a concept called Magnetized Liner Inertial Fusion (MagLIF),based on magnetic fields and laser pre-heating.

Check out the cool nuclear earrings. I think I will get some for Mrs. Roadie.
Sure, I want fusion like the next man, just like with thorium, but we pull the rug from under our feet by giving the public the impression that commercial fusion or thorium is just around the corner. Fact is, to the sci unwashed public, fusion and thorium are just evil and dangerous nuclear by another name, and if they're not educated enough to be assured and comfortable with our current crop of nuclear plants, don't hold your breath that they'll hop with joy for fusion or thorium. It behooves the supporters of those technologies to help educate the public of the safety and near nil accident mortality record of present nuclear plants -- which have nothing to be ashamed of -- to help pave public acceptance for their own future projects.
